2010 Iowa Property Tax Assessment Protest Information
Every two years, in odd numbered years, all Iowa real estate is re-assessed to attempt to reflect an estimate of "Fair Market Value" for tax purposes. If you missed the opportunity to protest your assessment last year, you have another chance coming up soon!
Because there are many factors in estimating the current market value of any property, it may be helpful to investigate your current assessment and if needed, file a protest if your current assessment is inaccurate.
Due to a number of circumstances, the assessed value of a property can exceed what you would be able to sell your property for today. In those cases it is very important to file a protest to roll back the value to a "Fair Market Value".
It is important to remember that an assessed value that exceeds your market value is not good. Many believe having a high assessed value makes their home appear to be worth more to potential buyers in the future. Instead an over assessment makes selling that property hard, due to an inflated tax bill, which increases a buyers payment!
Protest dates for 2010 are April 16th, 2010 to May 5th, 2010!
Note: Dallas County deadline extended to June 5th, 2010 due to disaster declaration.
Protests must be filed with the Assessor / Board of Review in the County
in which the property is located.
When filing a protest for over-assessment, you will need to be prepared with the concrete evidence to support your claim. You may need sales prices of recent properties, similar to yours and in your neighborhood, or a recent appraisal. One helpful resource can be a good appraisal. Betsy Pokorny of Des Moines Real Estate Services provides several options to assist you. More information can be found at her website here.
